The Beautiful Torres Strait Islands. The Torres Strait Islands are a stunning archipelago of 274 islands scattered across the blue seas between Australia and Papua New Guinea. As well as being places of outstanding natural beauty, they are historically significant in our country’s defense during World War II. Today 17 of these islands are inhabited and the two most populated are Thursday (Waiben) Island and Horn (Ngurupai) Island. Punsand Bay Cape York Camping are a booking agents for Peddells, who operate the ferry service between mainland Australia & Thursday Island. Our reservations team can also arrange guided island bus tours. Please note the Torres Strait Islands are a popular inclusion on most people’s Cape York itinerary and as such, we recommend booking in advance to ensure you don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience the beauty, culture and history of the Torres Strait Islands for yourself.
